The Three Sisters

$100.00

The “three sisters” are three specific crops grown together in a symbiotic system which combined create a whole food that can sustain human life. These crops have been planted together by indigenous farmers for thousands of years. The corn acts as support for the climbing beans. The squash acts as shaded ground cover protecting all three plants’ root systems. The beans and the corn, in turn help shade and protect the squash. The three crops exchange differing oxidants with the earth, which in turn, support each others’ growth and development.

I feel this interconnective alliance is perfect symbology for how women work together. This print includes the sunflower, which is a fourth sister guardian, sometimes used as a boundary crop to keep predators away, but mostly it’s here because my prima daughter loves sunflowers.

Original two color reduction linocut print. Edition of twelve (12), five (5) prints available for sale. Print size is 6“ x 8”, paper size is 9” x 11“.

Reduction linocuts are referred sometimes as suicide prints. Once the first color is run, the block is away carved to “reduce” the printed area for the next color application. After each successive color application, the block has been irrevocably changed and can never print the first colors again.

Printed on Arnhem 1618 print paper. 100% cotton, acid free and 245 gsm (90#) thickness.

Image is sold unframed without watermarks. Shipping is included.
